Day Five Continued, June 3

AROUND HARTINGTON

And we say adieu to York and hello to the Peak District,  Hartlington, Derbyshire. A two hour drive and we're in a different world. Instead of cars, people and ongoing pealing church bells, there are lowing cows, rooks, chirping birds, cooing pigeons , farm machinery and the smell farms and burning brush. The English countryside ~ In the distance are steep green hills and moors.

Hartington

Our room is a postage stamp, there isnt even a chair, just a stool. And AGAIN with the hot and cold separate taps! No towel heater either. We went to the village store for tea, wine, drinks, and tea biscuits.

I'm Standing in the Doorway Which is Also the Closet

I Hate This

Aside from our hotel (walkers welcome) there is a small square with a duck pond-slash- Sacred Lake, there is a farm that was a little concerning when we first arrive because of the aroma. There is the village store, PO, the beautiful 12thC church on the hill (only quietly chimes the hour), a tea room, a good looking pub, a store called Ye Olde Cheesee Shoppe making cheese right there, sort of a hardware place, an antique shop and a chocolate store. The rest of the village is comprised of the sweetest stone cottages.

Love the Details

Last night a few people were burning coal. I like the smell but not the emissions, the mining or the black residue.

Why don't we have random carvings like this at our homes? You find a beautifully made piece of stone and place it in your wall just for fun. Everything in the US has to be so perfect and new. There's a real loss in that. For the most part we don't value history, art, craftsmanship or anything that means giving up a chance to look rich or make money. Once an old house or artifact is gone, its gone.

OK, off the soap box... hey, it's just that all this makes you think. Thats what travel is about, to get out of your own small  (at times) head and see more than yourself, there's a to to enjoy. Except for hot and cold separate faucets.

Its a BIG world!
